Commercialisingcomplex technology

Murphy & Company helps frontier tech businesses grow, with top-tier marketing and go-to-market expertise that closes the gap between what you’ve built and what the market wants to buy.

  • Deep tech
  • Aerospace
  • Defence

The problem

Build it and they will not come

These are the most common symptoms, and they all trace back to one cause.

01 With investors

The meeting goes well. Then silence.

02 With customers

Your champion loves it, but can’t sell it internally.

03 With government

They like it. Nothing moves.

If this happens, you have likely fallen into the commercial translation gap.

The distance between what you’ve created and what the market understands it to be.

These are different symptoms of the same problem. No one understands the value of your novel technology and what it means for them.

My proven approach

Questions about working together

If you’re commercialising technically complex technology and need stronger positioning, go-to-market strategy or marketing execution, probably. Some clients come to me because the market doesn’t understand them: customers don’t grasp what they’ve built, fundraising stalls at the narrative level, partners describe them differently in the room. Others already have the story right and need the senior marketing capability to take it to market: brand, campaigns, content, digital, events and sales enablement. The common denominator isn’t the sector or the symptom. It’s a technically sophisticated product that has to be understood by non-technical decision-makers.

Yes, through Growth Quarters. Each one is 90 days built around a single outcome, ending in a re-score, run as advisory, done with you, or done for you. It covers brand and campaigns, content and thought leadership, digital and web, sales enablement and pursuits, events, business development and funding support (grants, R&D incentives and investment), government affairs across Australia and the United States, and fractional marketing leadership, with a vetted network of senior specialists. Fees are fixed per quarter and never linked to the amount raised. Every engagement starts with the Diagnostic.

If your product exists and you are in live conversations with investors or customers, you are not too early, and fixing the story now is cheaper than fixing it after a failed raise. If you are pre-product and still proving the science, you are probably too early for a paid engagement, and I will tell you that on the first call. Either way, start a conversation. The first call will tell you whether your constraint is the story or the absence of anything taking it to market, and it costs you nothing.

Yes. The Diagnostic is two workshops and a fixed fee from $7,500 USD, and it is the reason the quarters work. Workshop 1, Diagnose, measures the gap and finds the cause. Workshop 2, Rewrite and plan, rewrites the story and plans the year. Then, quarter by quarter: 90 days each, ending in a re-score. If the leadership team cannot tell a materially stronger story at the end, the agreed deliverables are refined for up to 30 days at no additional professional fee. Companies that think they have a strong story usually find out where it leaks, which is the more valuable outcome.

The first step is a 30‑minute call. The Diagnostic is a fixed fee from $7,500 USD, principal-led throughout. If the story is not materially stronger at the end, the agreed deliverables are refined for up to 30 days at no additional professional fee. Growth Quarters are tailored to the outcome and quoted once the Diagnostic is done. Fees are fixed per quarter and never linked to the amount raised. There is no rolling retainer. You renew a quarter at a time, or you don’t.

With rigour. Many clients operate in sensitive sectors where discretion is not a preference. It is a requirement. Every engagement operates under mutual NDA as standard, and I understand that some of the most important work I do will never be publicly attributable. The practice is structured accordingly, with all communications and materials encrypted and secured as a matter of course.

Commercial narrative work does not need controlled technical data, and I structure engagements so it never touches any. The story is built from what you can already say to the audiences you are trying to reach, not from the engineering underneath it. Where a company operates under ITAR, the Defence Trade Controls Act or the Defence and Strategic Goods List, I agree with you at the outset what is out of scope, who on your side reviews materials before they go anywhere, and how drafts are stored and shared. Nothing controlled leaves your environment, and I am comfortable working inside yours.
